설원기 추상화  설원기

이번 전시에서 설원기는 추상화를 선보인다. 설원기의 과거 작품들을 통해 알 수 있듯이 그는 그 동안 구상화와 추상화, 두 장르를 모두 보여줘 왔다. 특별한 선호도 없이 구상화와 추상화 장르를 병행하는 이유에 대해 설원기는 작품의 제작 과정에서 의도적인 차이를 느끼지 못한다고 이야기한다.

그는 회화를 포함한 모든 시각 예술 작품들은 눈을 통해 보는 것이지만, 실질적으로는 우리 머릿속에서 그려진다고 믿으며, 눈으로 보는 모든 것이 시각화 되지는 않는다는 것을 주장한다. 눈으로 보는 시각적 신호들이 머리 속에서 걸러지면서 어떤 것들은 빠지고 때로는 눈으로는 보이지 않는 것들이 더해지면서 머릿속에서 그림이 완성된다는 것이다. 실제로 이러한 개념은 지난 60여년간의 과학적 연구를 통해 입증되어왔다.

물론, 머릿속에서의 시각적 구성은 작가와 관람객 개개인의 고유한 사고 패턴을 기반으로 한다. 설원기는 시간이 흐르면서 이러한 사고의 패턴도 함께 변하기 때문에 작가가 자신의 사고적 특성에 충실하다면, 시사적인 이미지나 주제에 의존하지 않고도 시대를 반영할 수 있다고 강조한다.  

설원기는 모든 예술작품들이 어느 면에서는 작가의 자화상이기도 하듯이, 이번 전시의 모든 추상화 작품들 역시 자신의 자화상이라고 설명한다. 그는 관람자가 작품을 감상할 때 작품에 드러난색채와 표현하고자 한 의도를 읽어내는 동시에 각자의 머릿속에서 작품을 그려보기를 원한다. 이는 시각적인 게슈탈트에 의존했던 과거와는 달리, 교육과 라이프스타일을 통해 판독과 분석에 근거한 시각화를 하도록 훈련받아온 현대인들에게는 비교적 쉽게 가능한 것이다. . 이렇듯 설원기의 작품들은 시각적인 유사성이 불필요한 자화상을 보여주며, 관람자의 감상을 통해 또 하나의 인격이 완성되기를 제안하고 있다.

 

The abstract paintings of Sul Won Gi Sul Won Gi

This exhibition presents abstract paintings of Sul Won Gi. Sul has in the past showed both gurative and abstract paintings,

 without showing a special preference for either genre. When asked about the lack of a singular stylistic direction, 

he has always claimed that he felt there was not a purposeful di erence in the di erent works.

Sul has always believed that visual art, including painting, was seen by the eyes, but visualized by the mind. 

He has clari ed that all is seen is not all visualized. The mind lters the visual signals, subtracting and at times adding 

what was not even seen, to construct a picture of the mind’s making. This concept has been veri ed by scienti c researches over the past 60 years.

Naturally this visual construction by the mind takes reference from the thinking patterns of the artist and the viewer. 

Sul wants to emphasize that these thought patterns change with the times, hence if the artist is true to his thinking characteristics, 

he will be able to re ect the times without relying on images or concepts depending on current events.

Sul says that all the abstract paintings in this exhibition are self-portraits, 

as all art is in some form self-portraits.  He wants the viewer to visualize the portrait in the mind by reading 

the intents expressed by the paint and the artist. 

He says that we have been trained by education and current life style to visualize by reading and analyzing 

rather than by visual gestalt, as in the past. The paintings presents a personality, a self-portrait without the

need of visual likeness.
